Hanamichi Sakuragi (桜木 花道 Sakuragi Hanamichi?) is the protagonist of Slam Dunk. At the beginning of the series, Sakuragi is a slacker, good for nothing other than fighting. He is the leader of the feared “Sakuragi’s Gang”, which consists of his four friends Mito, Noma, Ohkusu and Takamiya. Sakuragi was always trying to ask girls out, but was rejected constantly, the 50th rejection occurring at the start of the series. He then met Haruko Akagi, a lovely basketball fangirl, whom he fell in love with immediately. This and Haruko’s encouragement led to him to join the Shohoku basketball team. However, as a complete beginner, he was not able to keep up with the rest of the team at first despite his height, athleticism, stamina, speed and leaping ability. He regards himself as a genius though, with self-confidence that borders on arrogance. Sakuragi’s most recognizable trait is his red hair, though he shaves his head as reparation for an error that led to a loss in the Interhigh Tournament against Kainan. He has a habit of making fun of other players by giving them various nicknames, such as calling Akagi “gorilla”.

Terry Bogard (テリー・ボガード, Terī Bogādo?) is a video game character created by SNK Playmore (previously SNK), and is the main character of the Fatal Fury series. In the series, he is an American fighter who enters the worldwide tournaments called The King of Fighters to kill Geese Howard, a criminal who killed Terry’s father. Terry becomes a formidable fighter, earning the title of “Legendary Hungry Wolf”. In the fourth tournament he participates, Terry nearly kills Geese, but recants from doing so. Geese responds to this by apparently committing suicide. Terry then decides to become the guardian of Geese’s son, Rock Howard.

Piccolo (ピッコロ Pikkoro?) is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball manga, authored by Akira Toriyama. Piccolo was first introduced as the reincarnation of the evil Piccolo Daimao in chapter #167 The Tenka’ichi Budokai Disturbance (波乱の天下一武道会 Haran no Tenkaichi Budōkai?) first published in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on April 4, 1988, making him a demon and archrival of the primary protagonist, Son Goku. However, it is later revealed that he is from the race of alien beings called Namekians. After Goku defeats Piccolo, Piccolo decides to team up with Goku and his friends in order to beat newer, more dangerous threats. He also trains Goku’s first child Son Gohan, and they form a strong bond.
